Tokyo Disneyland operator logs record profit

TOKYO —

Oriental Land Co, the operator of the Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea theme parks, said Thursday it posted record-high group net and operating profits in fiscal 2009 that ended in March despite a drop in the number of visitors.

The company booked a net profit of 25.43 billion yen, up 40.6% from a year earlier, mainly due to cost-cutting efforts. Its operating profit rose 4.6% to 41.92 billion yen on sales of 371.41 billion yen, down 4.6%.

For the reporting financial year, 25.82 million people visited the two entertainment sites, down 5.2%, the second-biggest rate of decline, though this was largely the result of a natural fallback from the previous year’s increase in visitor numbers due to the 25th anniversary of Tokyo Disneyland, it said.
