TOKYO —
Japan’s birthrate came to 1.37 in 2009, unchanged from 2008, government sources said Wednesday. The latest figure, representing the estimated number of children a woman will bear in her lifetime, means the uptrend since 2006 halted last year.
After hitting a record low of 1.26 in 2005, Japan’s birthrate, one of the lowest in the world, grew between 2006 and 2008 as more women in their 30s gave birth. Officially called the total fertility rate, the figure is calculated from the population of women aged between 15 and 49 and the number of children each of them gave birth to in one year.
