Mitsubishi Tanabe to enhance employee ethics following data fraud

OSAKA —

Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corp will introduce an in-house educational program to enhance employee ethics as part of efforts to prevent a recurrence of the fabrication of drug test data by a subsidiary. The data fabrication was initiated by a manager sent by Mitsubishi Tanabe to Bipha Corp in Hokkaido and could not be prevented as workers at the subsidiary were not in a position to refuse, the drugmaker said.

The educational program is among preventive measures included in a business improvement plan submitted by the two companies to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, which ordered Mitsubishi Tanabe in April to suspend some of its pharmaceutical manufacturing and sales operations for 25 days due to the misconduct.

Other measures include upgrading the internal whistle-blowing system and conducting a program on the pharmaceutical law, according to Mitsubishi Tanabe.
