Fair Work Australia has raised the minimum wage to $15 per hour or $569.90 per week from the 1st of July. The $26 per week rise is below the $27 requested by unions but well above the maximum $12.50 put forward by employer groups.
The tribunal found that strong economic performance and projections meant that the raise could be made without impacting inflation, employment or growth. The Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry slammed the increase as fiscally irresponsible.
"There is a strong case for a rise in minimum wages to provide a fair and relevant safety net, protect the relative living standards of award-reliant employees and assist the low paid to meet their needs," said President Justice Geoffrey Giudice.
