New vehicle sales up 28% in May

TOKYO —

Sales of new cars, trucks and buses in Japan leaped 28% from a year before to 228,514 units for the 10th straight monthly rise, an industry body said Tuesday. Sales of passenger cars, excluding minivehicles with engine displacement of up to 660 cc, climbed 29.9% to 207,272 units, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

The Japan Mini Vehicles Association said sales of minivehicles rose 12.4% to 127,634 units in May, marking the fifth straight month of growth.
