Company Makes a Cell Phone With 100-Decibel Ring

A British company based in Hertfordshire has created a cell phone with a ring volume that can reach 100 decibels - the volume of a pneumatic drill or a passing train. The model also has large, clearly marked buttons.

The target market for the phones is people with hearing loss and the elderly. The thousands of units of the phone have been sold by organisations such as the Royal National Institute for Deaf People. The Geemarc Clearsound CL8200 retails for $130.

"A lot of customers who were hard of hearing were fed up ... and wanted a simple phone they could hear, make calls from and receive texts," said Jamie Murray Wells, chairperson of Geemarc.
