A new study based on a Gallup phone survey has found that people over 50 years of age are generally happier and less stressed than those in their early to mid-twenties. 340,000 Americans were studied for the research.
Arthur Stone, a psychologist who conducted the research, said: "That can be based on social things, on societal things, on biological things; and for us that is the big question." The trend remained when other well-being factors were accounted for.
These included marriage, employment and having children still living at home. The research studied the two measures of well-being: overall happiness, or global well-being, and day-to-day feelings of stress and happiness, or hedonic well-being.
