White Rice Shown to Increase Risk of Diabetes

A new study by experts in the United States has shown that eating white rice may increase the risk of contracting diabetes, as it causes a steep rise in glucose levels. The study was done by doctors at Harvard.

200,000 people took part in the survey, which concluded that wholegrain products were healthier because of the effect they have of releasing glucose more slowly than their white counterparts. In fact, brown rice seemed to cut the risk of diabetes.

Those involved in the study who ate two or more servings of brown rice every week were 11% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who ate one serving of brown rice per month. Over 70% of the rice eaten in the developed world is white.
