IPad boosts Apple's market share

Apple Inc.'s share of the domestic notebook personal computer market more than tripled in May from the previous month to 11.5 percent thanks to the popularity of its iPad tablet computer, which went on sale in Japan in late May, market research firm BCN Inc. said Wednesday.

Based on sales data from 2,365 home electronics retailers, BCN said Apple's market share, including the iPad, surged in May from 3.5 percent in April, lifting the company to fourth in terms of unit sales.

BCN said Apple surpassed electronics giant Sony Corp., which fell to fifth place with a market share of 9.3 percent.

Toshiba Corp. retained top spot with 22.1 percent, followed by Fujitsu Ltd. at 17.4 percent and NEC Corp. at 16.0 percent, but their market shares declined in light of Apple's surge, the data showed.
