TOKYO —
The European Union has recognized the Japanese Agricultural Standards for organic crops and products as equivalent to its own regulations. The recognition will allow produce certified under the JAS to sell as organic products in the EU market, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
It is the first time that the Japanese organic certification system has been authorized overseas. The authorization is expected to promote exports of organic products, such as green tea and rice, from Japan to the European Union, analysts said. Japan has already recognized EU standards for organic products as equivalent to Japanese standards.
