Christmas illuminations sparkle all over Tokyo

TOKYO —

Shopping districts in Tokyo have turned on their nightly illuminations ahead of the Christmas season with one area trying a new energy-saving project of more than halving power consumption but keeping the brightness.

The nightly lighting of Tokyo Tower is now in competition with one of the capital’s largest Christmas trees twinkling in four colors at its base. The fir tree, about 15 meters tall and about 50 years old, was brought in from Gunma Prefecture and stands in front of the Mikimoto store in Ginza.

Some 850,000 eco-friendly light-emitting diode bulbs are glowing in champagne gold at the Marunouchi district near JR Tokyo Station. This year’s lighting only needs roughly one-third the electricity of previous years with the brightness unchanged as the organizer replaced nearly a quarter of the LED bulbs with the newest model that can emit more light.

A total of 153 trees lining the streets of the fashionable Omotesando district are sparkling in warm colors, while the Omotesando Hills shopping complex is presenting a tree embellished in 250,000 crystal ornaments.
